    APRIL 2017

    April 8 - 2nd Annual Appomattox River Regional Park 5k Trail Run.  Hosted by Prince George Parks and Recreation, Riverside Regional Jail, and Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR).  Proceeds to benefit FOLAR and Special Olympics.  Run begins at 9:00 am, Appomattox River Regional Park, 800 Folar Trail, N Prince George, VA.  For additional information call 804 458-6164 or go to http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov or register go online at www.raceit.com.

    April 23 - Appomattox Garden Club Tea at Weston.  Tea time is 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm and features fantastic goodies and a tour of the Garden Week floral decorations at Weston Plantation, 400 Weston Lane, Hopewell, VA.  Cost is $10.00 per person.  Call Becky Hyatt, 804 458-1023, or Judy Marks, 804 541-1184, for tickets.  Tickets are also available at Weston Plantation’s “All Manor of Things” Gift Boutique. 

    April 27 - 30 – 12th Annual Spring Tour, Defending Richmond, at Pamplin Park.  A. Wilson Greene and other local historians examine the efforts to capture the Confederate capitol.  Tour also include visits to the Seven Days Battlefields, North Anna, Haw’s Shop, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor, White House of the Confederacy, Tredegar Iron Works, and Belle Isle Prison.  For more information on this tour and to make a registration, go to their website at http://pamplinpark.org/event/12th-annual-spring-tour-defending-richmond

    MAY 2017

    May 6,7 – The Cavalier -  N&W Class J 611 Train – Lynchburg, VA, to Petersburg, VA.   If you are not riding the train, come to Old Town Petersburg to see this vintage steam engine at its best and meet some of its passengers.  Train will arrive in Petersburg about 12:30 pm where passengers will have a 3-hour layover to explore Petersburg. If riding the train, see some of the most beautiful Virginia scenery while leisurely relaxing in one of the cars.  Train departs Lynchburg each day at 6:30 am and arrives back at 8:30 pm.  For reservations and amenities while abroad the train, go to http://fireup611.org/excursions/2017-the-cavalier

    May 13 – 6th Annual Prince George Community Day.  8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Scott Memorial Park, 6680 Courthouse Road, Prince George, VA.  Food, Spring Plant Sale, Bake Sale, and Grand Prize and Hourly Raffles. Crafts and specialty vendors and local civic organizations and businesses are invited to reserve an Event Tent to share your wares.  Please contact thewomansclubofpg@gmail.com if interested in an event tent.  The Prince George Hometown Heroes Fun Run 5K and Little Hero Feet Meet will begin at 9 a.m.  Race Registration at https://runsignup.com/hometownhero5k.

    May 13  --  ACS Run For the Fallen.  A tribute run for our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrificed for our nation’s freedom.  8:30 am check in time at William Stadium, Fort Lee, VA.     May 13 – 12th Annual VCU Health Cap2Cap—Charles City.  This is an annual ride from Richmond to Williamsburg on the Virginia Capital Trail (Route 5).  Bicyclists can choose 15, 25, 50, or 100-mile route.  This is not a race, just leisure riding.  Entry cost will include lunch and access to a post-ride party.  For cost and registration go to http://virginiacapitaltrail.org/cap2cap-ride/

    July 4 – Independence Day.  Celebrate the 4th at Pamplin Historical Park.  Enjoy costumed interpreters, see artillery firing and color guard demonstrations, experience life for the Civil War soldier, and explore life on an authentic 19th century plantation.  Park located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road, Petersburg, VA.     July 15,16 – 42nd Annual Pork, Peanut & Pine Festival.  10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.     August 8-9  -  Emma & George Days at Weston Plantation.  9 am – 12 pm.  Emma and George Wood lived at Weston Plantation during the Civil War.  This is a 2-day event of activities, exploration, crafts and games for children ages 8 -12.  Fee is $40 per child.  Sponsored by Historic Hopewell Foundation at Weston Plantation, 400 Weston Lane, Hopewell, VA, 804 458-4682.

    October 20-22  -  21st Annual Civil War Symposium:  Generals We Love to Hate.   Friday through Sunday.  Seven scholars will discuss topics surrounding these Civil War Generals:  General Buell, General Burnside, General Hooker, General Hood, General Butler, General McClellan, and General Johnston at Pamplin Historical Park.  Park is located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road, Petersburg, VA.  Go to www.pamplinpark.org or call 804 861-2408 to register and for more information.

    October 21  -  VA Czech & Slovak Folklife Festival, 11 am – 4 pm.  Music, food, demonstrations, children activities, and more.  Festival is held at the  Prince George Regional Heritage Center, 6406 Courthouse Rd, Prince George, VA.  Call 804 863-0212 or send email to pghistory@aol.com for more information.  Admission is FREE.   Food is available for purchase.

    October 28 & 29  –  Pecan Festival in the Grove.  Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.  Cook off contests, three pageants, live music, food, vendors, craft activities, face painting, games, live animals, and more.  Event location is Richard Bland College of William & Mary at 11301 Johnson Road, South Prince George, VA.  FREE admission.
