    Vietnam Art Exhibit at PGRHC
     
    If you haven't visited the Prince George Regional Heritage Center, then you will want to soon.  On April 3 through April 30, the Center will open with a "Vietnam Combat Art" Exhibition, showcasing artists' impressions of the Vietnam War.  On display will be "39 artworks in oil, watercolor, pastels, acrylics, pencil, ink and crayon" by professional artists in Vietnam during 1960's era.  The Center hopes the exhibit will pay proper tribute to our "heroes" of yesterday and today.  The Center is located at 6406 Courthouse Road, Prince George, VA.  For more information about this exciting collection on display, go to www.princegeorgevahistoricalsociety.org or e-mail to PGhistory@aol.com or call 804 863-0212.  THANK a Veteran today.

    GARDEN WEEK, when? 
    Historic Garden Week is April 23 through April 30 throughout Virginia.  Some of our most historical and beautiful homes will open their doors and gardens to some of the most fantastic displays of art and beauty.  Weston Plantation at 400 Weston Lane is open daily for tours, and Petersburg Garden Week Tour is April 26.  Garden Week books are available for pick up at the Hopewell/Prince George Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, 4100 Oaklawn Boulevard, Hopewell.  For more sites to visit and dates go to http://www.vagardenweek.org.

    About time!  Prince George will honor our Firemen and EMS personnel with their very own museum.  Plans are in the process to convert the Old Food Bank Buildings at the Courthouse Complex into this special museum dedicated to Prince George Firemen and EMS personnel.  Prince George Regional Heritage Center is working diligently to make this happen.  More information to come soon. 
     
      
    Pamplin Park, Museum of the Civil War Soldier has some very exciting events planned for April and throughout the Year.  Join them on April 2 for their 10th Anniversary, Break-Through Anniversary Tour.  Walk in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers and see the unveiling of new exhibit and other special events throughout the day.  Tickets are $12.50 and include complimentary breakfast.  Bring a flash.  Start time is 5:00 am at Pamplin Park's Civil War Adventure Camp off Duncan Rd, Dinwiddie County.  Park will open at 9:00 am to public for daily events and special activities.  For further information call 804 861-2408 or go to http://www.pamplinpark.org or MemberServices@pamplinpark.org for registration information.
     
     
    It's a BIG Day for Sutherland!!  --  Southside Virginia Heritage Days at Historic Fort Inn is being celebrated on April 2.  Historic Fork Inn (also known as Sutherland's Tavern) will be open for tours.  Event also include the Olgers' Store Museum, Civil War reenactors to commemorate the April 2 1865 Battle of Sutherland Station, and open-hearth cooking, crafters, farm animals, children's stories, and delicious food and baked goods for purchase.  Event begins at 9:00 am - 5:00 pm - Saturday / 9:00 am - 3:00 pm - Sunday.

    A one time only deal?  Well, maybe not.  On April 9 the Fort Lee Quartermaster Museum Staff will have a Special Presentation at the Hopewell Library.  Learn about artifacts and research documents housed at the Fort Lee Quartermaster Museum. Staff will share tales of soldiers and sailors with an opportunity for hands-on history. Learn about Fort Lee neighbors and enjoy refreshments.     Experience and learn about the soldiers who fought in the War for American Independence from England on Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17 at the 25th Annual Revolutionary War Reenactment - Battersea.  There will be reenactors, regimental drills, training exercises, skirmishes, and battle demonstrations.  Bring the whole family for fun, history, and lots of excitement!  Events take place on Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at Battersea, 1289 Appomattox Street, Petersburg.  For additional information call, 804 733-2402 or go to www.petersburgarea.org.

    Firemen's Parade?  YES! YES! YES!! 
    One of the best ways Hopewell wants to celebrate its 100th Anniversary is with a Fire Apparatus Parade.  The Hopewell fire on December 9, 1915, which almost destroyed the whole city, was a major time in firemen history.  So, to celebrate Hopewell's history, come and join our firemen, as well as  firemen from the surrounding communities, make a "lot of noise" in this exciting parade.  Parade begins at 6:30 pm at Cavalier Shopping Center, 15th Street, to City Point Road to Main Street, and will at Ashford Plaza, Main Street and Route 10.  For more information call 804 541-2288 or dhunter@hopewellva.gov.  Remember to always support our FIREMEN, and say "Thank You".  They deserve it!

    4th Annual Kite Festival (All Ages) and Kite Festival 1K Fun Run (Ages 5-12). Prince George Parks and Recreation is sponsoring this event, which features fun contests and opportunity to build and fly a kite, as well as the fun run.     The Nathaniel Cawsey Garden Club of Hopewell will hold its 22nd Annual Garden Party, "Tropical Paradise" at the Country Club of Petersburg.  Guest speaker is Mr. Al Brockwell, owner and operator of FloraCulture of N. Chesterfield County.  Carolyn Hoagland from "All Manor of Things" Gift Shop of Historic Weston Manor will be offering exclusive accessories, handbags, clothing, and jewelry before the program and during the break.  The Club is located at 1250 Flank Road, Petersburg.  A $30.00 donation will be appreciated.  Tickets may be purchased from Patt Woodby, 804 458-7108.

    Lower Appomattox RiverFest.   Celebrate the river and its connection to our communities.     "Walk" across Virginia".  This got my attention.  How does one "Walk" across Virginia?  Well, Katrina Kirby, a Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent, specializing in Family and Consumer Sciences, can tell you all about FitEx and invites everyone to join her and other teams on this venture to get fit.  FitEx is an 8-week physical activity program developed by Virginia Cooperative Extension.  Teams are formed with a Captain to help everyone get fit through exercise and nutrition.  Want to know more?  Call Katrina at her Petersburg Office at 804 733-1880 or email:  kirby2@vt.edu.  Program fee is $2.00.
