    "Light Up the Night"
     
    Excitement reigns supreme at Ashford Civic Plaza as Hopewell kicks off the Holiday Season with its annual parade, tree lighting, and special concerts with its theme of "Light Up The Night" on December 4, 2016.
    • Festivities begin at 3:30 pm with the Annual Parade from Cavalier Square Shopping Center on 15th Avenue to City Point Road to Main Street and ending at Ashford Civic Plaza.
    • The Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place at 6:00 pm at Ashford Civic Plaza, along with some special activities including Horse and Carriage Rides and some Downtown Shops open for your enjoyment to welcome the Holiday Spirit.  Concessions will be available for purchase.
    • Special Concerts by local school groups at the Beacon Theatre at 401 N. Main Street starts at 6:30 pm and includes a Special Guest to welcome everyone (of course Santa himself).

    "Christmas Fun for Everyone"  (Even The Grinch)
     
    Whoa ! Who wants fun? Bah Hum Bug!  Prince George County does, of course!!!!.
    "Christmas Fun for Everyone" is this year's theme for our Prince George County's Annual Christmas Parade.  This parade promises to have everyone wanting more fun! Join the community to see marching bands, old and new cars, trucks, and fire trucks, floats (galore), animals (of the four legged kind), lots of children (some retired), and, of course, a SPECIAL guest (of the Ho Ho Ho clan).  Parade begins at 3:00 pm on December 3, 2016, at Beazley Elementary School and Scott Memorial Park and ends at Redwood Lane on Courthouse Road, Prince George, VA.  Contact Prince George County Parks and Recreation for additional details at 804 458-6164 or go to the County's website at www.princegeorgeva.gov and scroll to Upcoming Events.  
     
      Visitor Welcome Center will be OPEN December 24 and CLOSED December 25.  However, Hopewell/Prince George Chamber of Commerce is CLOSED both days.

    History
    Tea and learn something new from the old.   Unthinkable!  Well, here is a plan for your afternoon delight.  Tea & Tidings - Christmas at Pamplin Historical Park is December 3, 2016.  Gourmet afternoon tea served, along with ladies and gentlemen in period dress sharing 19th century etiquette, history, and customs of the season during Civil War era.  There will be singing of Christmas carols and stories from the past.  Reservations are required.  Cost is park members $20 / non-members $22.  Tea time will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Pamplin Historical Park at 6125 Boydton Plank Road, North Dinwiddie, VA.  Need more information or to make a reservation, call 804 861-2408 or visit their website at http://pamplinpark.org/things-to-do/special-events/.  
     
     
    "Christmas on the Plantation" - a special program on December 10, 2016 presented by the Petersburg National Battlefield, City Point Unit.  The Epps Family (owners of Appomattox Manor Plantation at City Point) was in Petersburg for the holidays in 1865 and returned to City Point in 1866 for the holidays.  This programs showcases the return of "Christmas on the Plantation" and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the aftermath of the Civil War.  Living historians will portray the Eppes and some of the employees who lived at Appomattox Plantation.  Event is FREE and begins at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at Grant's Headquarters,  City Point Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield, 1001 Pecan Avenue, Hopewell, VA.  Contact Emmanuel Dabney at 804 732-3531 ext 222 or email to Emmanuel_Dapney@nps.gov or go to the Park's website at www.nps.gov/pete and click on events.
     
    Community Events
     
    I can see it now, glowing flickering light reflecting off shiny balls and crystal and silver setting with a backdrop of warm, cozy shadows.  "A Candlelight Christmas" is the theme for a progressive tour of three Virginia historic homes decorated for the Holiday Season.  Shirley Plantation, Berkeley Plantation, and Edgewood Plantation invite you to their Plantation homes on December 1, 3, 5, 10, 17, and 26 to share the beauty and warmth of the holiday season.  Tours will begins at Shirley Plantation and ends at Edgewood Plantation.  Reservations are required.  Cost is $42 per person.  Two tours are planned daily at 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm.  Contact Shirley Plantation, 501 Shirley Plantation Road, Charles City, VA, at www.shirleyplantation.com/calendar/  or call 804 829-2962 for additional information about their tours.
     

        
    Join families and friends for two special Wreath Laying Ceremonies on December 2, 2016, to honor our fallen heroes in the line of duty -  Prince George County Police Officers, Prince George County Sheriff's Deputies, and Virginia State Police Officers.  First ceremony will be at 9:00 am at Merchants Hope Cemetery, 11302 Merchants Hope Road, Prince George, VA.  The second ceremony will be at 11:00 am, Southlawn Cemetery, 1911 Birdsong Road, South Prince George, VA.  Go to Prince George County website at www.princegeorgeva.gov/calendar.php/ for more information.
     
      
    A Special Tree Lighting Memorial Service is planned for "families who have lost loved one due to senseless crimes" on December 6, 2016.  The Prince George County Commonwealth's Attorney and the Victim Witness Offices are hosting this ceremony.  To have your loved one honored, a photo is requested for the remembrance board and a memorial ribbon will be provided to place on the tree.  Service will be at 6:00 pm in front of the Prince George County Courthouse at 6601 Courts Drive, Prince George, VA.  To register, please call 804 733-2753.

    Holiday Boat Parade Hopewell City Marina.  Parade begins at Jordan Point Yacht Haven and ends at Hopewell City Marina. Best viewing if Hopewell City Marina, Riverside Harbor Park, and City Point Waterfront Park. Special activities at Hopewell City Marina following the Parade. Additional parking and shuttle at Weston Plantation. Concessions will be available for purchase.     24th Annual James River Parade of Lights.  Sponsored by James River Advisory Council.  Parade begins at Richmond - Libby Hill Park through Henrico County to Chesterfield County - Henricus Historical Park.  Parade viewing begins at 6:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm.  If more information is desired, call James River Advisory Council at 804 717-6681.
     
    December 10, 2016
    Dinwiddie County Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas Parade. 
    This parade departs from the Dinwiddie Middle School located on Courthouse Road and heads South at 1:00 pm until 3:00pm.  Parade will end at the intersection of Courthouse Road and US Route 1.  For more details go to www.DiscoverDinwiddie.com
     
    December 11, 2016
    Chester Annual Christmas Parade.  This parade begins at the Chester YMCA on Route 10 and proceeds West in Chester to Centre Street (Harrowgate Road).  Parade begins at 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.  If more details needed, call 804 318-1564.
       
    Food



    Boar's Head Feast at Henricus.  Enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of a special Christmas at Henricus Historical Park on December 17, 2016.   A multi-course feast includes roasted meats, pies, ales, ciders, and more served in the candle-lit Guest House with a blazing Yule log.  Enjoy dining to period music with wassailing a-plenty and many toasts to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I.  Cost is $65 per person, and reservations are required.  Festivies begin at 6:00 pm until 8:30pm at Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Road, Chester, VA.  More information at be found at http://henricus.org or by calling 804 748-1611.
