Legacy of Healthcare in Hopewell and Prince George County, Virginia The Historic Bluff Hospital
Today, a modern HCA hospital, the John Randolph Medical Center, sits on a bluff just west of City Point. During the war seven hospitals operated at City Point during the siege with the largest being the Depot Field Hospital which covered an area of 200 acres.
The hospital located here during the Civil War had a capacity of 10,000 patients, treating both Union and Confederate Soldiers. The excellence of the facilities and the quality of the staff made the Depot Field Hospital the largest operation of its kind during the Civil War as well as the finest.
Today this historic bluff called City Point is a harbor for local industry, a site for excellent healthcare, as well as a favorite destination for students of history, boaters, kayakers, and cycling enthusiasts.
