We are a proud Nation with so many reasons to be grateful.  Just one of those many reasons is our VETERANS.  Celebrate this Veterans Day, November 11, 2016, with your family and friends at one of the many ceremonies held in our area.  Tell a Veteran - Thank YOU.  Here are just a few ceremonies for you to consider: 
 
City Point National Cemetery, Hopewell, VA.  The Ceremony is 11:00 am at the City Point National Cemetery at 10th and Davis Street, and includes a Guest Speaker, Honor Guard, and Wreath Laying.   Event is hosted by American Legion Post 146, Hopewell, VA, who will serve lunch to veterans at 217 E. City Point Road following the ceremony.  Post 146 can be contacted at 804 541-3735.
 
 
Prince George Regional Heritage Center, Prince George, VA.  There will be a guest speaker and wreath laying on the front lawn.  This Ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 am on the lawn of the Center at 6406 Courthouse Road, Prince George, VA.  For additional information call 804 863-0212.
 
Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia invites you to join them in this special ceremony with Guest Speaker, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Cold War Museum.   Music will be provided by Thomas Dale High School Band and L.C. Bird High School Chorus.  Fly over by North American T-28 "Trojan" courtesy of Warbird Museum of VA.  This event is FREE and open to the public.  Ceremony begins at 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Chesterfield Historic 1917 Courthouse Green, 10011 Iron Bridge Rd, Chesterfield, VA.  They can be contacted at 804 796-7156, or email  chsvexecutivemanager@gmail.com or www.petersburgarea.org.

Want to experience what the First Thanksgiving was like?   Berkeley Plantation is going to let you do just that!  The Virginia Thanksgiving Festival is November 6, 2016, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm and "recreates America's First English Thanksgiving".  Festival includes parade with horse drawn carriages and fife and drums, re-enactors, music, period games and dancing, Chickahominy Tribe dance, and so much more!  Festival and Plantation gardens/grounds are free, but a $10.00 parking donation or $20.00 bus parking fee donation is requested.  Regular fees apply for House Tour.  For more information go to www.virginiathanksgivingfestival.com or call 804 829-6018.  Berkeley Plantation is located at 12602 Harrison Landing Road, Charles City, VA. 
 
 
100th Anniversary of World War I Event:  Camp Lee Training Trenches Tour.  Walk with park rangers as they take you on a 1-hour tour focusing on historic training trenches used by soldiers at Camp Lee, now Fort Lee, in 1918.  Many trenches remain today on the boundaries of the Petersburg National Battlefield.  Tour begins at 11:00 am and again at 2:00 pm on November 12, 2016, at the Eastern Front Visitor Center, Petersburg National Battlefield, 5001 Siege Road, Petersburg, VA.  Contact Ranger Aaron Rowland at 804 732-3531, extension 205, or send email to Aaron_Rowland@nps.gov.  Additionally, at the Eastern Front Visitor Center, there will be World War I and U.S. Army Cavalry re-enactors providing various demonstrations.         

Community Events
 
A Night at the Quartermaster Museum.  Wonder what goes on at the museum after dark?  This is a special, interactive gallery adventure on November 5, 2016, that is sure to excite everyone attending.  Pre-registration is recommended.  Participants will receive a BOGO Free coupon for "Once on This Island, JR." at the Lee Playhouse in March 2017. Excitement is from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the

Going Once, Going Twice, SOLD!  This is what you will hear often at the
"All Manor of Things" Silent/Live Auction on November 5, 2016.  The Historic Hopewell Foundation is sponsoring this auction at the Beacon Theatre, 401 N. Main Street, Hopewell, VA.  Doors open at 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm and silent auction is followed by live auction.  There will be food, wine, music, and, of course, lots of fun.  Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased by calling Historic Hopewell Foundation at Weston Plantation at 804 458-4682. 
 
 
Back by popular demand!  The 52nd Annual Home for the Holidays Craft Show and Bazaar is coming once again to the Hopewell Community Center on November 5, 2016.  Sponsored by GFWC Junior Women's Club of Hopewell, this is an annual tradition that many look forward to attending.  Admission is $3.00 for advance tickets and can be acquired by contacting hopewelljuniors@yahoo.com.  Event begins at 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at 100 W. How about more November FUN before the "big feast".  Let the Hopewell Kiwanis Wine-Tasting Festival help you decide best wine to compliment your dinner feast.  Taste, talk, compare, and enjoy an afternoon in a delightful, relaxing atmosphere.  This festival is November 19, 2016, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Beacon Theatre at 401 N. Main Street, Hopewell. "Tis the Season" is almost here and to get started Prince George County is having their annual "Christmas Tree Lighting" on November 30, 2016.  Help Prince George County Parks and Recreation and Prince George Historical Society and residents kick off the Holiday Season with its traditional "tree lighting" ceremony. Enjoy the sounds of Christmas and refreshments, as the switch is pulled.  Event is FREE and begins at 7:00 pm

RECREATION
 
Turkey Trot 2016 in Colonial Heights is November 24, 2016.  This is a community Thanksgiving Tradition.  Event is 1- mile Fun Run/Walk and a 5K Fun Run/Walk.  Register by November 1 for prize drawings and November 18 for T-shirt. Fee is $20 - 18 and older; $15 - students 6-17; $75 - family pack ( 2 adults and 4 students); free - 5 and under; $25 - day of event.  Race begins at 7:30 am - 8:30 am at the Colonial Heights High School, 3600 Conduit Road, Colonial Heights, VA.
