     Czech-Slovak Festival!
    Put on your dancing shoes and bring your appetite for the BEST DAY, ever!  The Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival is October 15, 2016.  A fun-filled day of traditional foods, beers, bakery items, musical performances, dancing, farm life exhibits, and activities for children can be enjoyed by the whole family.  The Prince George Regional Heritage Center has a fantastic display room dedicated to the heritage of the Czech and Slovak community.  This event is from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm at the, Prince George Regional Heritage Center, 6406 Courthouse Road, Prince George, VA, and is FREE (rain or shine).   Proceeds will benefit the Prince George Regional Heritage Center.  For additional information go to www.princegeorgevahistoricalsociety.org and scroll down to this event or call 804 863-0212.  
    Trains, Trains, and more Trains! Well, this one you can ride but not to work nor to the big city.  Board the Autum Leaf Rambler Train for a 3 l/2-hour, round trip train ride twice a day into some of the most scenic, countryside in Virginia.  Beautiful foliage, rolling hills, and deep forests are just part of the trip.  There will be extra special appearances by the Tom Mix Rangers for a "taste of the Old West relived"!   About half of the seating is in open-sided cars, is on a first-come, first served basis, and is subject to weather conditions.  Train departs from the Buckingham Branch Railroad Station, 1043 Main Street, Highway US 15, Dillwyn, VA, (approximately 90 minutes from Richmond) and returns.  The dates are October 8, 15, and 22, 2016.  Tickets are $30.00 for adults, $18.00 for ages 2 - 18, and children under 2 not occupying a seat ride free.  Advance purchase is strongly recommended.   For more information call 804 231-4324 (voice mail) or go to www.odcnrhs.org.

    Halloween and Pumpkins
    Berkeley Corn Maze, Pumpkin Patch is back again this year. If you missed it last year, make your plans for this year. Tour the Berkeley Plantation home, have fun in the corn maze, pick your own pumpkin to take home, and much more. General admission fee applies, plus extra fee for pumpkins.  Activities and tours will be available during the months of October and November from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.  Berkeley Plantation is located at 12602 Harrison Landing Road, Charles City, VA.  Call or go online at 1-888-466-6018 or www.berkeleyplantation.com for more information.
    A whole month of scary fun is just around the corner with the Petersburg Haunts Ghost Walk.  All walks begin at the Petersburg Historic Courthouse at 7 Courthouse Avenue in Petersburg at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm. New stops and more stories have been added this year to make the experience even more haunting. Tours are

    Pumpkin Time at Richland's Dairy. Enjoy corn maze, hayride, petting zoo, and walking farm tour.  Before you leave, pick the perfect pumpkin to take home.  Lots of homemade treats will be available in the concession stand.  Tickets are: Adults $10 and children 2 - 12 and seniors $5.  Farms will open to public at 10:00 am until 5:00 pm on Saturdays and 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sundays.  The Richlands Dairy Farm is located at 116 Cox Road (Route 460 W), Blackstone, VA (western Dinwiddie County).  They can be reached at 434 294-0498 or go online to http://richlandsdairyfarm.webs.com
    Well, not enough PUMPKIN fun? There is more on
    October 15, 2016 at the Chippokes State Park - Harvest Celebration.  Celebrate harvest time at one of the oldest, continually farmed plantations in the nation.  Chippokes' 3d Third Annual Harvest Celebration will feature the music of the William & Mary Appalachian Music Ensemble.  You will be able to build a scarecrow, paint a pumpkin, create a corn husk doll, play a round of corn hole, take a hay ride, go shopping at the many craft vendors, and then re-energize yourself at the food vendor tables.  Additionally, see antique harvest equipment in operation, watch costumed interpreters cook on the hearth, weave baskets, spin thread, and cane chairs.  Tours of the antebellum Jones-Stewart Mansion and the Farm & Forestry Museum are included in the $5.00/per vehicle park admission fee.  All the fun begins at 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Park address is Chippokes State Park, 695 Park Rd, Surry, VA.  On line information is available at www.chippokes.com/events.php#harvest_celebration or call 757 294-3728. 
    Boo!!!  Hopewell Haunts at Crystal Lake Park. Haunted hayride and forest walk, carnival rides, campfire stories are just part of the FUN on October 28, 2016.  This celebration is sponsored by Hopewell Parks and Recreation Department and is FREE and open to the public.  Parking will be limited at Crystal Lake/Mathis Park, but shuttle buses will be provided from Atwater Park and Soccer Complex.  Concessions will be available for purchase.  Children should be accompanied by an adult.     Costumed guides take you on this hair-raising, lantern tour across haunting battlefield trails, an old plantation home, an eerie cemetery, and more.  Voices from the Shadows - A Walk, Through Hallowed Ground Tour is set for
    October 28 and 29, 2016, at Pamplin Historical Park. Reservations are required and tickets are $10 - Adults / $5 - Children 6 - 12 / Free for Park Members.     Love car shows, then this is for YOU! The "grove" at Richard Bland College of William and Mary will feature the 17th Annual Southern Knights Cruisers Veterans Car Show to honor our veterans on October 1, 2016.  This event is sponsored by the Southern Knights Cruisers Car Club and Strosnider Chevrolet.  On display will be some of the "finest, high quality show cars from Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina", as well as, some trucks and bikes.  For more information on this event, visit the Cruisers' website at www.southernknightscruisers.com.  Cars will be on display from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at 11301 Johnson Rd, S.     Who can resist RIBS?  The annual Hopewell/Prince George Crime Solvers Rib Fest is set for October 6, 2016.  There will be, of course, the food, but also live DJ sponsored by the Oldies But Goodies Classic Cruizers.  Menu of ribs, chicken, slaw, beans, roll, and ice tea will be prepared by Nanny's Restaurant.  Event is from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Scott Memorial Park, 6680 Courthouse Rd, Prince George, VA.  Call 804 690-9225 for more information and tickets.
    Pecans and Pecan Pie, YUM!!!!  This is the first-ever pecan festival in our area and is set for October 29, 2016.  Richard Bland College of William & Mary is home to the "oldest, largest pecan grove in Virginia with more than 1,000 beautiful, towering pecan trees". The pecans are harvested each year and the proceeds are used to advance student success and maintain the groves.  This year the College is hosting its 1st Annual Pecan Festival with a Pecan Pie Bake-off Contest, Little Miss Pageant, Alumni Reunion events, as well as craft activities, face painting, games, live animals, and more.  This event is FREE and will be held rain or shine.  Festival is from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at 11301 Johnson Road in South Prince George, VA.  More information can be found at http://www.rbc.edu/events/campus/pecan-festival/ or by calling 804 862-8528.

    The Harbor Blast 2016 Summer Concert Series will have their final concerts on October 1, 2016, with "Oktoberblast" and October 8, 2016, with "The Wild Sound Unlimited 50th Reunion".  Live music by the river, food and beverages, and more will be celebrated by all attendees.  There will be a $10 admission fee, and parking is free.  Children under 18 are free with parent or guardian.  Gate opens at 5:00 pm, Appomattox Boat Harbor, 1604 Fine Street, Prince George, VA.  Go to  www.harborblast.com for more details.

    City Point 5k & Kids Fun Run is sure to be your best "5K" run/walk this year.  Now, runners, joggers, and walkers can experience fantastic views of the Appomattox River, explore old City Point, and enjoy the sights and sounds of a "comeback" downtown Hopewell in this exciting City Point 5K and Kids Fun Run on October 29, 2016.   Dress in your favorite costume for this fun run.  The 5K will begin at 9:00 am and the Kids Fun Run will begin at 11:00 am.  Fee is $20 for adults 18+, and children 12 to 17 are FREE.  Additionally, the Hopewell HEAL Fest will follow the event with a variety of demonstrations and special activities to promote "healthy eating and active living".  For more information about all the events and to register for the events, go to www.hopewellva.gov/city-point-5k.  
    Petersburg Halloween Half Marathon & 5K.  Dress in your scariest costume or regular running clothes for this races on October 23, 2016.  This 5K starts and finishes in Old Towne at the Union Train Station.  Parking is free.  Prices are:  Half Marathon:  $55 - 1st 100 sign-ups and $65 - Rest of Runners; 5K:  $20 - 1st 100 sign-ups and $25 - Rest of Participants.
